1:53 PM hey sec 1s.. did you guys realise your attendance has been very bad ever since exam's over?i still remembered there was once when 1 sec 1 told me 'it a disgrace to go to regent and hougang, cause we can't play at all, compared to them we are nothing.' hearing this i'm somehow happy at the same time sad. happy in a sense you guys can realise you can't play well but on the other hand sad that you guys are admiting defeat.wanna know why?because somehow you already have the mindset in your mind that you can't play well and you can't compare yourself to the other schools.i have to admit too, i'm not perfect but one thing i don't admit defeat, i'm still practicing hard to get things right but are you guys doing the same?i'm not here to put the sec 1s down but think about it, have all of you been practicing hard?ya maybe a handful of you guys only, what about the rest?admiting defeat?not willing to practice?not wanting to come?you can run away but how long can you run?do you want to be send to the principal's office then you're willing to come?why do you want to admit defeat?why not practice hard and play well? still remembering when i was the sec 1 ic. taking you guys may be tough but did i give up?no i didn't cause i believe that everyone of you have a talent in you it's just whether you're willing to let that talent shine. you all have been like the stock market..at times u rise..but soon u drop again.this can't be happening always.you guys must keep rising up and up not down.this apply to the main band too.. hey!bear this in mind, in 2 months time all of you are gonna be in sec 2,taking part in SYF next year. the seniors can't be spoonfeeding you always. seniors have been trying hard to teach you all but are you guys appreciating it?i don't think so. even Ms Loh is making the effort to come down every saturday to tutor you guys but are you all appreciating when only 10 turn up out of 24. it's really time for all of you to buck up.for those sec 1s that are always turning up for band that's good, and i really need each and everyone of you to moltivate one another to come for band.many many events are coming up and everyone is part of it, all of us have to work together and bring the band up to another level together. bear this in mind, bringing the band up to another level is not only the effort of the seniors, it includes you, the sec 1s.when u guys can play well and do things right you're not the only one happy, the seniors, alumni, teachers, ms loh and mr lim would be happy too. i really wished what i've written won't go to waste. reflect. meanwhile don't you think it's time for all those who doesn't come for band to attend band regularly now? yubing
Just to benefit those who were absent the previous practice. There will be NO practice on Friday and Saturday. However, normal practice will resume on MONDAY. Refer to your holiday schedule for the time. Those who have to attend lessons, better don't find excuse to skip any of it if not you will find yourself in deep trouble. Practice hard on all the scores given. On top of all those, please don't neglect your etudes and 12 major scales.. Those who are free and can make it to travel, you are encourage to join the Hougang band or Regent band on Saturday for extra practices. Bare this in mind, time is really running short.JIA YOU!! Pauline=)

Holidays coming soon and which means the compeition is drawing nearer and nearer. We are only left with less than 20 combine practices, less than 20 sectionals!!before the trip Holiday practices will be very tiring and tough so as far as possible, try not to make yourself fall sick. Drink a lot of water to keep yourself in healthy condition alright.=) !!Those having holiday lessons. Don't use band practice as an excuse for not attending your lessons. You are expected to turn up for all your lessons. After lesson, arrange with your section leader and your other section members for at least one and a half hours of sectional EXCLUDING setting up and packing time.!! I believe all of us will be able to make it for the compeition or any performance if we continue to work double hard. Let's work hard together as one. ONE BAND ONE HEART ONE SOUND!! Pauline

Hey, just want to share something I've read..=)
It's an extraction from a book entitled The Art Of getting along with people by Cecil G. Osborne,D.D I personally find it quite interesting and meaningful.Enjoy=D..! AFFIRM PEOPLE! John Steinbeck tells an elderly man who brought backa big bass violin one afternoon, His wife asked, "What in the world are you going to do with that thing?" "I'm going to play it," he rejoined. "You can't play an instrument!" she snored. But every evening he spent an hour or so with his finger on one string, sawing it back and forth, producing a single note. Day after day he played that one doleful sound. Finally his wife said, " You know, i think that people who play that instrument keep moving their fingers back and forth on that strings." "Sure," he said disdainfully. " They're looking for the place. I've found it " When you sound the note of appreciation and affirmation, you've found the key to vastly improved musically. Occcasionally people object that they feel insincere in playing frequent compliments. This is due to lack of practice. Everyone undertaking a new skills feels awkward at first. But here is the important anitdote to that feeling: It is never hypocritical to say or do the appropriate things. With practice you will begin to fel quite ease in bestowing well deserved praise or offering recognition to people. This goes to all Sec1s too. Maybe you all may not be able to produce nice sound. Don't get embarassed or whatsoever. Keep on trying until you get it. "It is never hypocritical(feeling guilty) to say or do the appropriate things" Practice hard..=) Pauline
Hey Band Members; Exams have ended. For those who have done well, continue to keep up the good work=)) and for those who have not, do reflect on why you do not do as good as others. Don't be discourage, work double harder if there's a need to for you to do well. Oke,i guess all of you or perhaps most of you have read what MrLim posted previously. So i shall not repeat again. Spare some time to think about it. Where and what went wrong and how are we suppose to work as one band to solve problems occuring. I know problems will always be here and there but how are we suppose to lessen it. Shouldn't we work harder and complain lesser? Hard work with effort and sweat put in will definitely show in the final result.Dont be dishearted if you fail the first time.Try again until the day you did it, until the day you reach your goals and targets. Oh well. the KL trip is like in 2 months time. I truely understand that some parents don't allow their child to go due to various reasons. Try to convince them, if really it does not work try getting Mrs Gan to talk to them..? You'll never know if you don't try alright. I really hope more of you can participate in this Music Festival. You can never buy this learning experience and the fun and excitement you'll definitely get. Experience it yourself and you'll know what i mean. For those who have gone for the previous 2 trips either to KL or Hong Kong. I'm sure you all are clear of what I meant. Start practicing hard.Even if you are not going, there still be the year end performance and the exchange which MrLim has mention today. The etudes given, 12 major scales for sec1s, the scores given. There's a lot of things to be fixed here and there and I really mean a lot..Rhythem;articulation;dynamics;everything you see on the whiteboard. We have to combine everything together during the performance. So how much more time can we waste..? The faster we learn, the more the things we can get in terms of music and knowledge.=)Start bringing home your instruments, start to have SERIOUS sectionals whenever there is one.Don't waste time talking to your bandmates. You all can talk for all you all want after practice alright. Pauline ps: we should let the blog be alive not only just the tagboard which frequently tag by Hazizi, heng shoon, commander, first officer, etc etc..=))
Dear Bedok North Band, While your band has a nice page and beautiful photo which seems to portray your motto of "One Band, One Heart, One Sound", it is time everybody does a reality check. While you can shout loudly and write such things all over the place, you have to first feel it. I write this for everyone to see, not to demoralise anyone, but to let everyone hear my concerns. Bedok North Band, you have been very inconsistent. There are some hardworking ones amongst you, but there are also some hardworking ones who only function seasonally. It is too late to say this. But some of your current seniors taking exams, or past seniors who took exams would know exactly what i say and some of what i say would have struck fear in them but at this point it is rather too late. That feeling of helplessness 1 day before exam, or few days before exam, that so much revision has not been completed. That wretched feeling of regretting the hours spent at fast food centres, at the shopping centres, playing soccer, hours spent dazing while holding textbook in front of yourselves, remembering the self consoling words you gave to yourselves that you will know it eventually and there is always tomorrow that you can study. The fact is, there will come a day when there is no more tomorrow. Whoever reads this blog will now know exactly how your band functions. I do not like for any of us to pretend. To pretend everything is alright, to pretend that we are good. I do not think a band can be good with its attendance falling to 50+%, I do not think a band can be good with its band majors being late for band practice. I do not think the band will be decent with its student conductor not having that discipline to wake up and always late for at least 1 hour. This is the truth. And everybody saw it. If appointment holders do not want people to talk about it, you should start shaping up. Even if I do not talk about it, you know very well the moment you step in at 9.30am instead of 8am everyone whom you expect respect from are already whispering about you. Earn your respect. Do not merely expect it. While I advocate better being late than never, and I am glad while people are late they do not pretend to be sick and do not come, but we all know this late syndrome is like a cancer. It will spread and soon we will be so affected that we cannot no longer function well anymore. Where working in the holidays is concerned, apart from those who officially are receiving financial aid from MOE, i really do not think the rest need to work. What are you working for? To buy an extra bag? To pay for your exhorbitant phone bills? To go for extra movies? And for all these you say you NEED to work? The need to work comes when you do not have parents anymore and you need to feed yourself and your siblings, or if your parents are in the low income bracket and registered themselves with IRAS and MOE and you even have problems paying 55cents to take bus to come to school. Understand this. While claiming your NEED to work, you are actually missing out an extremely important part of your teenage life, and wasting an opportunity which will never come back again. For $5 an hour of less, you lose the precious few months of time spent with the band, jeopardize concerts and competitions, affect the future of the band which will be recorded as history. The day when a clarinet or tuba or saxophone player missed an entry in performance, because he or she has not been coming for practice because he or she "NEEDED" to work. You tell me, is it fair to your section, your band, your school? Do you realise this is supposedly the happiest part of your life? Do you know once you stop studying you will be working till the day you die? Put it in perspective, you study from 5 years old to maybe 22 if you make it to university. For those who do not, you finish Poly at around 19. You study for around 17 years and you work for at least 46 years? And you cannot stop working from then on anymore. Because nobody will support you anymore, you have to worry about paying utilities, paying for your house, your food, your family's needs, your children's education, of which if you do not, you will have no electricity, no roof over your head, no food, your children do not get to go school and potentially gets despised. You know this is what your parents and guardians are going through right? You get the picture. So why do we want to learn as much as we can during the 17 years? Besides enjoying what we want to learn, we want to learn hard so that we can work less than 46 years, retire earlier more comfortably, work a job that pays better and is more meaningful and enriching. If you have seen or heard your parents quarrel over money so often and seen the pressure and stress on them, dont you agree by learning harder now, in every aspect of school life, you will have lesser chances of landing yourself in that kind of situation where money is never enough? So right now you are still talking about your "NEEDS" and worried about no chance to work? GET A LIFE. LEARN MORE WHILE YOU CAN. Life is not about working at your age. We all know at your age because you do not have enough qualifications you are all doing tiring, dirty menial work no matter how important your "managers" or employers make you feel. Tell me what you can work as is intellectually stimulating and challenging to your IQ? You are being exploited doing all the things a more educated person would never do, and given just that few dollars for standing so long behind counters, forcing yourself to smiling at people after 8 hours, covering all the dirty work people do not want to do. Don't get me wrong. I have all the respect for people working any jobs as long it is honest and morally upright. But I question the motives behind your desire to work. If you want to study so you must work, you have all the blessings and respect. If you want to sms more and buy another skirt so that you must work, I say that is not very intelligent. How many hours would you need to work to pay off your phone bills, to buy a bag, to go for a movie? For 1 movie you have to work for 2 hours? And movies last shorter than 2 hours?! And you want to slog for 20 hours to pay a $100 phone bill because you like to talk so much with a friend? If you decrease such a "need", dont you think you have more time to enjoy doing other things? Look, at the end of the day, its your life. Yes, the band gets affected, the school results may plunge, but 5 to 10 years later, it is you, whom we might see still cleaning tables and or standing behind counters for a long time in your lives and remembering you once read this message and could have been better at mathematics or geography or learnt more in band may just have come a little too late. You could have had a different life. But, it will always be a "could have". Regards, Mr Lim
